BEC in the Media - Archives for Year 2006

Green Streets
South China Morning Post, 28 November 2006, A20

BEC's COO, Kevin Edmunds said, "There are many examples of developers who have put in things to save energy and some of them have had a payback in two years." He cited HSBC as an example. HSBC installed a higher standard air chiller in its headquarters in Central, estimated to save more than HK$ 1 million a year in energy costs. He also said that government incentives and regulations did not always work in fostering more environmentally sustainable construction, because they were often not rigorous enough or set the bar too low.

BEC's CEO, Dr Andrew Thomson, responded to how climate change affects the business world after Nicholas Stern released a major British report, which predicted that global warming may lead to an economic disaster similar to the Great Depression in 1930s:

Warnings on global warming rightly alarming
Sunday Morning Post, 12 November 2006, P.12 (Leaders & Letters)

Dr Thomson wrote to the Post, "As a professional environmentalist and the chief executive officer of the Business Environment Council, I must respond to Simon Patkin's negative opinion of the Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change and his glowing support of popular fiction as a credible guide to the motives of green advocates..."

Dr Thomson said, "Though Hong Kong is fairly remote from UK, it doesn't mean that it is not related to us in Hong Kong. However, The Stern Report may not invoke a direct reaction to local and Mainland companies," for addressing the global warming issue.

Dr Thomson said that "business is very diverse." Business should "do more with less -- less water or less chemical consumption etc. We want to help business to do their business in a more sustainable way." He also pointed out that "the drivers are weak. We need stronger drivers such as legislation to help with the climate change problem."

In ATV's "Money World" program, BEC's Head of Business & Technical Services Mr Barry Kwong talked about Hong Kong's environmental development. He pointed out that how large corporations incorporate environmental assessments into their management system so as to attract foreign investment, and at the same time, showing to the public that they are socially responsible. There is also a growing trend that small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are looking for ways to improve their environmental and social performance. He also highlighted that eco-production has become a global trend to both consumers and manufacturers.
