Honouring green product excellence
The Hong Kong Eco-Products Award was first launched in 1999 by Business Environment Council and five leading industry associations: the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, the Chinese Manufacturers' Association of Hong Kong, the Federation of Hong Kong Industries and the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, with the guidance of Honorary Patron Prof Anna Sohmen. It is the only program of its kind at that time in Hong Kong to honour green excellence and promote product responsibility.
In early 2008, it was incorporated as part of the Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence, a government program led by Environmental Campaign Committee. Business Environment Council is one of the organisers, helping with the judging criteria, assessments and call for entries.
Background Iand Aims of Hong Kong Eco-Products Award
Local and worldwide trends have shown increasing demand for consumer products manufactured by companies that exhibit sound environmental and social responsibility.
The award aims to recognize environment-friendly or Eco-Products and the visionary companies that manufacture them, as well as to encourage local manufacturers to reduce the environmental impact arising across their products' life-cycle. The award also aims to raise the awareness of general public by promoting the availability of these Eco-Products to consumers. The award is supported by over thirty industry associations, government departments, green groups and consulates, and is endorsed by the Global Ecolabelling Network.
Over the years, award participants have not benefitted not only from gaining recognition for their product excellence, but also have gained new market opportunities and learned through the award assessment how they have further improved their products from cradle to cradle.
