Buildings and their construction make substantial positive contributions to Hong Kong in terms of the economy and society. However, unless well planned and controlled, significant negative social and environmental impacts can also arise.
Initiated in June 2003, the Sustainable Buildings Committee and Infrastructure seeks to promote sustainable initiatives and address environmental issues within the building industry. The working group meets every two months to discuss latest developments in the field and take forward initiatives to promote further progress. Key areas cover:
- reviewing and commenting on consultation papers, and advising government on topical issues such as green building labelling;
- organising technical briefings and tours to share knowledge on innovative techniques and technologies for buildings and construction;
- initiating projects and programmes to further promote sustainable buildings and construction in Hong Kong.
