The issue of climate Change has risen from a marginal to a key business issue. BEC offers tailor-made carbon and greenhouse gas (GHG) strategies, programs and tools for your company to calculate, set and meet emission reduction targets. We follow the widely-used Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) - Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard of World Resources Institute and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, as well as applying local GHG emission factors, where available, to calculate your company’s GHG emissions.

Companies worldwide are increasingly aware of the needs to quantify, manage and reduce the carbon footprint GHG emissions that result from their operations. When this information becomes available, companies can then develop carbon reduction strategies and set targets to reduce emissions through implementing energy efficiency measures and using less resources. Additionally, they can adopt carbon neutrality strategies whereby the remaining GHG emissions are offset through purchasing carbon credits. Carbon neutrality negates the release of GHGs by one of two ways: either removing the same amount of CO2e, or equivalent tons of carbon dioxide, from somewhere else, or by taking steps that avoid the release of CO2e from another source in the first place.

What is a carbon footprint?

A carbon footprint is a measure of greenhouse gases (GHGs) produced in units of carbon dioxide equivalents. Businesses usually release GHGs indirectly or directly when fossil fuels (e.g. gas, coal, oil, diesel) are used for lighting, heating and air conditioning or for running motor vehicles and business travel, emissions from waste and process gases. Some companies also choose to look at the emissions throughout their supply chain e.g. from distribution activities, raw material manufacturing to consumer use and disposal. These gases are then measured collectively and converted into CO2e – carbon dioxide equivalent, thus giving a standard measure for a carbon footprint that can encompass all GHGs.
