Facilitating Sustainable Buildings
- to establish working relationships with active institutions, researchers, government departments and the Construction Industry Board;
- to initiate and collaborate in research into design (eg solar shading, renewable energies, predictive design tools), construction (innovative technologies and methodologies), materials (eg recycled, sustainable, bio-degradable), operation and maintenance and facility/property management (eg performance monitoring and contracting);
- to initiate and collaborate in programmes/ initiatives such as a labeling/endorsement/award system for building products, an energy efficient building award (or star rating), a green construction award, visits to green buildings and building material recycling plants, etc;
- to initiate, participate and collaborate in industry seminars/conferences to promote the findings and successes of the above, and foster an agenda for continual improvement; and
- to disseminate information to professionals through new or existing magazines (eg in partnership with HK-BEAM Society and CIRIA), newsletters and the development of guidelines and sample specifications, etc, and to the public through periodic press releases.
Services in Sustainable Buildings
- BEAM – winning assessments with new and existing clients, broadening the framework to other buildings, and training "licensed" assessors;
- Energy Audits – acquiring the skills and equipment to optimise energy and offer registration under the EMSD's Energy Efficiency Registration Scheme;
- Training and Seminars – providing tailor-made training (e.g. in construction management, EMS, etc) and Building by Design seminars.
Information Resources (Planning)
The Virtual Information Centre (a sustainable buildings website), including:
- statistics (and trivia) on HK buildings – number of properties (existing, and built/demolished every day), benchmarks (eg energy consumption and costs, material use, life expectancy, waste generation, etc in average and best practice buildings);
- information on building and environmental issues (global, local and indoor);
- examples of sustainable buildings and practices (design, construction, management) in Hong Kong and overseas;
- research and initiatives in Hong Kong and overseas – universities, institutions, consultancies, interest groups, etc;
- an introduction to the building regulations, codes of practice, practice notes, etc;
- a directory of sustainable building products, services, technologies and techniques;
- links to related sites, suggested reading lists, and an online bookshop (in collaboration with CIRIA).
