HKAI Environmental Performance Award Winner - The Hongkong Electric Co. Ltd.

As one of the major power utilities in Hong Kong (HK), The Hongkong Electric Co. Ltd. (HK Electric) has been, for more than a hundred years, providing highly reliable electricity supply while caring for the environment of HK.

Commissioning of Unit L9 CCGT at Lamma Power Station (LPS), HK's first LNG fuelled generation unit, began a new chapter in HK’s history of power generation. L9, the most environmentally friendly and efficient generating unit in HK, accounted for 17% of total HK Electric's output in 2007 and contributed to significant emissions reduction of up to 36%. Also, CO2 emissions were reduced by 7.8%. Rainwater and treated effluents of LPS are collected for preparation of limestone slurry in Flue Gas Desulphurization process. 755,000m3 wastewater and rainwater have been reused since the scheme was launched.

HK Electric is operating Hong Kong's first commercial scale wind power plant – Lamma Winds. It has generated more than 2GWh of green electricity, avoiding 1,600MT CO2 emissions since commissioning in 2006. Encouraged by the success of Lamma Winds, HK Electric is studying the feasibility of developing a 100MW wind farm on HK's territorial waters.

Promoting education on smart use of energy is an effective strategy. Under its annual Smart Power Campaign, thousands of people participated in activities promoting energy conservation and efficiency. Moreover, HK Electric Clean Energy Fund provides support on study and development of renewable energy in schools. Since its inception in 2006, more than HK$3 millions sponsorships have been granted for 36 projects from local schools.
