Case Study - Corporate Social Responsibility / Community Development
Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH) recognises the importance of giving the next generation the education and skills needed for the twenty-first century. For this reason, a considerable portion of the Group's community efforts is focused on the younger generation. Spearheading this effort, the Group has created the HPH Dock School programme.
By 'adopting' a local school, HPH ports are able to provide both the financial and educational assistance that the school otherwise might not receive. Gradually growing in size, the programme has schools participating in Hong Kong, China, Myanmar, Jakarta, England and Panama.
Hongkong International Terminals (HIT) is the flagship operation of the HPH Group, the world's leading port investor, developer and operator. HIT first adopted Tsuen Wan Trade Association Primary School in 1992. For over a decade HIT has provided annual scholarships for those students displaying excellent academic performance. Additionally, the terminal has arranged numerous visits and recreational events at the terminal for the students.
In 1999 HIT adopted CCC Chuen Yuen College as its second Dock School. Sharing the high regard for information technology, HIT has worked closely with the school in developing a course for students to learn the foundations of web design. The course has been divided into three key areas: a familiarisation workshop for students to learn how to build web sites, a web site design competition and a sponsorship drive to fund the purchase of web software for the college.
Ng Tsan Kui, Principal of Tseun Wan Trade Association Primary School remarks, "With the support of HIT, our students are able to work harder in their pursuit of excellence."
Eric Ip, Managing Director of HIT commented, "HIT has chosen Chuen Yuen College because we share the same vision that Information Technology education should be the focus for students. Being a pioneer in utilising information technology in the container port industry, we intend to share our expertise with the younger generation."
Commenting on the partnership between Chuen Yuen College and HIT, school principal, Ruth Lee says, "It is indeed our pleasure and privilege to be one of HIT's Dock Schools. In this programme, students' learning is greatly enriched through visits, training and web-page classes supported by HIT. We look forward to further development to enhance students' experiential learning and community involvement."
