Sustainable Development Case Study - Community Development
Hongkong International Terminals Ltd - Kwai Tsing District Youth Community Servcie Competition

As a responsible corporate citizen in Hong Kong, Hongkong International Terminals (HIT) actively supports the community. Each year, HIT participates in a variety of projects. These range from promoting traffic safety in the Kwai Tsing area to educational initiatives.

One of these projects that HIT sponsored is the Kwai Tsing Youth Community Service Competition. The activity started with a group of students, who are long-serving and enthusiastic helpers in the Kwai Tsing District community services, form into groups and plan a series of community service projects, such as aiding the elderly, the mentally disabled, others in need of help and new arrivals in Hong Kong.

After submitting their plans, the students will carry out their tasks. The judging panel will decide the winning teams according to their plans set out and the results achieved. An exciting visit to Shanghai was the "reward" to the top three winning teams, which included a day trip to Shanghai Container Terminals, HIT's sister company, as well as a local orphanage in Shanghai.

One of the several significant events for the students was a get-together with other local young people where, using a mixture of Putonghua and English, they exchanged views on a wide range of subjects ranging from good deeds to pop music and fashions.

The group flew back to Hong Kong with their minds much enriched by the many different sights they saw and the various things they learnt on this enlightening visit to one of China's busiest cities.
