Ruby award winner - Ying Wah Cake Shop

Ying Wah Cake Shop (Ying Wah) first started in 1985; its business includes manufacturing and selling cakes, biscuits and pastries. With a manufacturing plant and office in Yuen Long, and two retail shops in Tai Po and Tuen Mun, it also currently provides services and food products to over 100 kindergartens in Hong Kong.

Commitment to Environmental Protection
Ying Wah collects waste materials such as baking paper and plastic bags for reuse internally, and has started a new environmental program by designating two Environmental Days every month. Blank packaging is used on the Environmental Days to reduce environmental impact arising from printing as well as to raise customers' awareness of the environment. "We are planning to extend the Environmental Days from two days per month to more," said Chow Wing-kam, Managing Director of Ying Wah.

Excellence in Employee Management
Ying Wah puts a considerable amount of effort into employee management. It provides different training for staff members, and job rotation is conducted to ensure all employees are familiar with all aspects of the operation. The company also cares about their staff's well-being. It implements a five-day working week, and flexible working hours for employees with special needs.

Achievements in Community Development
Last year Ying Wah committed to around 300 hours of volunteer services, through transportation, meal subsidies and time-off for employees to encourage their participation in community services. The company also works closely with Yuen Long District Youth Outreaching Social Work Team to organise youth programs such as Life Influences Life and job opportunities.

Overall Management Quality and Effectiveness
"We conduct customer satisfaction surveys regularly to collect customers' feedback, and we also invite stakeholders to visit our manufacturing plant to increase our company's transparency," Chow said. The overall management quality at Ying Wah is also shown in its ranking by the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department. Ying Wah was ranked at the lowest risk level, and inspection is only required at intervals of 20 weeks as opposed to the highest risk level where inspection is required at least once every four weeks.
