Schindler Lifts Uses ISO 14001 to Spearhead Environmental Initiatives and Win Client Environmental Award

Schindler Lifts, a member of the Jardine Group of Companies was certified to ISO 14001 in 2000. Since implementing its environmental management system the company has implemented a wide range of programmes including energy efficiency, environmental reporting, cleaner production, staff training and supply chain management. In 2002, the company received an environmental award from one of its major clients, the Mass Transit Railway Corporation.

Program Details
Schindler Lifts developed and implemented ISO 14001 over a period of 9 months and were certified by the Hong Kong Quality Assurance Agency in early 2000.

Program Costs and Benefits
The cost of the program was HK$200,000 for external consultants to assist in the initial environmental review, identification and development of procedures for operational control and record keeping. The program has resulted in full compliance with legislation, and has reportedly added value to existing clients,
and assisted in attracting new customers. In short providing a clear competitive advantage.

By embracing all existing initiatives into a single management system for review the company has been able to continually improve its environmental performance. The environmental management system has ensured that all wastes are disposed of appropriately, and has provided a safer working environment for field employees. It also led to an environmental award from the Mass Transit Railway Corporation in April 2002 as best contractor in terms of environmental performance.

Schindler’s advice to other companies:
Look for long-term opportunities rather than short-term benefits.
