Aero Engineers Benefit from Down to Earth Energy Efficiency Program

HAESL, a member of the Swire Pacific Group of Companies implemented an energy efficiency program in 2001-2002 with the help of a part-time energy manager. The programme started small but soared to an annual electricity coast saving of HK$ 4.2 million with capital investments paid back in 1-2 years!

Program Details
Part-time Energy Manager was employed from early 2000 to 2001. His role was to identify energy waste in all building services and industrial processes. Wide anges of energy saving opportunities were identified. No-cost improvements were done first, then, short payback, low-cost improvements and finally, more capital-intensive projects were completed.

Program Costs and Benefits
Use electricity expenditure in 1999 as baseline, the electricity expenditure in 2002 was reduced by around 25%. In terms of actual figure, the saving is round HK$4.2 million.

Payback period range: 0 – 2 years

Intangible Benefits
A progressive change in energy management effort has been made. There is also an increasing input to decision-making and environmental policy whilst constantly seeking further improvements whenever opportunity arises.

Lessons Learned
Sequencing of improvements works has substantially assisted the funding for improvements, intended to maintain a ‘positive value’ of savings over nvestment and managements costs throughout.

Advice and Recommendations to other Companies implementing similar initiatives
It is possible to start saving energy with minimal funding at the outset, to build up reserves of savings from very short payback measures enabling progressive investment in longer-term improvements thereafter.

"We felt an ongoing energy audit approach would give us better results over time than ‘snapshot’ surveys and recommendations by consultants, which we suspect we would probably not have had the resources to fully implement ”
