CLP Power’s Case Sharing - Delivering Value-added Customer Energy Services by Heat Pump Technology

Preamble
Hot water is expensive but is necessary for daily use such as bathing and showering, especially in commercial operations such as hotels. In delivering value-added customer services, CLP Power actively promotes the heat pump technology, an effective and wise use of energy in Hong Kong.

Heat Pump Technology
Instead of producing heat, a heat pump ‘moves’ heat from one system to another. One unit of power input to the heat pump will usually be able to ‘move’ several units of heat. Adding the power input that will also turn into useful heat, a heat pump is able to produce several units of useful heat from one unit of power input.

Heat pumps are not new. They had been used for a long time, mainly for space heating and occasionally for domestic hot water heating in North America and Europe. CLP Power has successfully helped our energy partners to adopt the system. Examples include water heating systems at the Kwong Wah Hospital and the Gold Coast Hotel, and dehumidification system at the library of the University of Science and Technology.

The use of heat pump contributes to a cleaner environment as well as substantial savings in energy cost. These include:

1. Energy savings up to 60% compared to comparable gas fired systems
2. No local emissions
3. Better utilization of plant room space
4. Cooler and quieter plant room

Impressed by the many benefits, many energy efficiency conscious orga nizations are actively working with us to explore the technical and financial feasibility of using the heat pump technology.

Lessons Learned
The heat pump technology is a proven technology and can deliver cost savings as well as an array of environmental benefits.
