Dairy Farm Harvests Rewards of Energy Efficiency Program

Dairy Farm, a member of the Jardine Group of Companies implemented an energy efficiency program in 2002 as a result of a rebate incentive offered by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government and the Hong Kong Electric Co.

Program Details
The program focused on the retrofit of 2283 electronic ballasts in the Dairy Farm Head Office.

Program Costs and Benefits
The cost of the program was HK$194,000 which was offset by a HK$160,000 rebate under the Demand Side Management Program available to non-residential applications, making the actual cost of the program to Dairy Farm minimal at HK$34,000.

The program has reduced energy costs by HK$91,000 per year, realizing a stunning 4.5 month payback period on Dairy Farm’s investment or 1.6 years on the total cost of the program.

This also translates into significant environmental benefits in terms of indirect reduction in carbon dioxide, oxides of nitrogen and sulphur at the power station. And, also assists in balancing demand for electricity during the peak daily periods.

The benefits do not stop there. Other benefits of the program include:

• Less heat is produced from the new lighting system, so less energy is required to air condition the building
• Quick start up of lighting
• Use of the system also saves starter motor costs, improves tube life, and reduces the overall maintenance requirements of the lighting systems
• A further bonus was a four-year warranty from suppliers
