Modern Terminals Saves Over HK$1,000,000 Per Year through Energy Efficiency Program
Modern Terminals Limited (MTL) has realized annual savings of over HK$1,000,000 through the retrofit of lighting and air conditioning chiller units. It also benefited significantly from a rebate incentive offered by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government and CLP Power as part of the Demand Side Management program.
Program Details
The program focused on the retrofit of 10808 electronic ballasts in the MTL offices and the replacement of two conventional chiller plants with more effective and efficient screw type chiller units.
Program Costs and Benefits
The replacement electronic ballasts cost HK$1,400,000, and MTL received a rebate of HK$750,000 from CLP.
The annual energy savings have been calculated to be approximately HK$750,000.
Providing a payback period on investment of less than a year for MTL’s investment and under 2 years for the total cost of the lighting retrofit.
The replacement chiller units cost HK$ 830,000.
The annual energy savings have been calculated to be approximately HK$320,000.
Providing a payback period on investment of 2.6 years for MTL’s investment, with substantial ongoing benefits.
Intangible benefits include:
- Less heat is produced from the new lighting system, so less energy is required to air condition the building
- Quick start up of lighting
- Use of the system also saves starter motor costs, improves tube life, and reduces the overall maintenance requirements of the lighting systems
- Reduced greenhouse gas emissions for Hong Kong
- Able to educate all staff about the significance of using energy more efficiently and benefiting the environment and the bottom line.
