Superstore Waste Water Treatment Plant Leads the Way
Wellcome Fresh Food, a member of the Jardine Group of Companies significantly reduced its wastewater discharge, and its costs related to government wastewater charges.

Program Details
The installation of a wastewater treatment plant in the company’s, Wellcome Fresh Food Centre (WFFC) resulted in discharge standards far exceeding government standards.

EPD Standard:
Biochemical Oxygen Demand < 500mg/l and Chemical Oxygen Demand < 1000mg/l

WFFC Performance:
Biochemical Oxygen Demand < 20mg/l and Chemical Oxygen Demand < 50mg/l

Program Costs and Benefits
Significant improvement in the pollutant loadings result in reduced burden on the environment arising from the WFFC facility.

The capital costs: HK$7,600,000 and operating costs: HK$48,000 annually

Savings achieved through obtaining an exemption under the Trade Effluent Surcharge, and thereby paying at a lower rate for water use consistent with the high standard on treatment – lets just say significant

Lessons learned:
Another win-win solution good for our business and the environment

Wellcome’s Recommendation:
Look for the long-term benefits of environmental programmes
