Wellcome Fresh Food, a member of the Jardine Group of Companies has achieved HK$6 million in annual savings by implementing a range of energy conservation programmes in its Wellcome Fresh Food Centres and Superstores.

Program Details
Company-wide Energy Conservation Programme to install:

  • Electricity Saver Devices in Superstores with air conditioning
  • Low energy lighting and electronic ballasts
  • Thermostatic control of electricity and mechanical systems


Program Costs and Benefits

Electricity Saver: Savings HK$408,000 Payback: 2-6 yrs
Low energy lighting: Savings HK$800,000 Payback: 0.5 yrs
Controls: Savings HK$5,200,000 Payback: N/A

Other benefits included:

  • The associated emission reductions
  • Increased awareness of management and employees of environmental issues and management opportunities
  • Improved community relations and reduced complaints about energy wastage in overly air-conditioned stores

Lessons learned:
Significant reduction in energy consumption can be achieved in stores with long operating hours. These savings are recurrent, and the costs of retrofit solutions are coming down, making walking the talk on environment a win-win solution for business.

For a successful implementation, a three way balancing act must be performed between the comfort of shoppers, the presentation of product in an unobstructed and attractive manner, and an affordable energy efficient installation.

Environmental management can be integrated into everyday operation in a way that achieves public and employee satisfaction with their performance, protects the environment and enhances profitability.
