''Saving Money and the Environment'' was a 'Preserve Planet Earth' voluntary Rotary district community service project in Australia. Our goal was to help aged and disadvantaged citizens reduce their electricity bills and their Greenhouse Gas emissions. Many of our recipients couldn't even afford their electricity bills let alone the price to retrofit their homes. We achieved this by supplying and installing over 4,000 compact fluorescent lights and 1600 green shower heads in the homes of disadvantaged people. The program was sponsored by local government and Rotary clubs. The shower heads and the lights were provided either free or greatly subsidized by manufacturers. This simple program saved over 3,000 happy recipients AUS$350,000 in electricity bills, but just as importantly it saved over 56,000 tonnes of Greenhouse gas from being emitted into our atmosphere.
