The IPCC estimates that 73 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions comes from inefficient air traffic management globally. Thus, improvements in routes significantly contribute to decreasing aviation’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. That is why Cathay Pacific works with industry partners and governments around the world to utilise more efficient routes and air traffic management systems.

In 2007, we were able to use more efficient routes in our Hong Kong to Toronto and New York routes using flexible tracks allowed by the United States Federal Aviation Administration and NAV CANADA, as well as new entry points in the Russian airspace. These have resulted to approximately 835 tonnes of CO2 emissions savings per year.

We look forward to more opportunities like these in the Pearl River Delta and European airspaces.
