BEC has worked closely with the restaurant trade and Environmental Protection Department to develop the Green Restaurants website which was launched in 2003. In addition, BEC has operated a Hotline and Meet-the-Advisor service to assist the restaurant trade to meet the environmental challenges in the Hong Kong. Currently, BEC is working with the restaurant trade to investigate in the efficient use of emission control equipment (hydrovent, EP, etc) to minimize nuisance in the compact urban environment.
The Trade and Indudstry Department SME Development Fund program on "Implementation and Support Programme for Mitigation and Control of Air Pollution Emissions from Restaurant Trade and Catering SMEs in Hong Kong" commenced in May 2006 with BEC acting as implementation agent for the Hong Kong Federation of Restaurants & Related Trades. Pollution control equipments from eight companies have undergone in-vitro testing on their emission performance at the Cooking Fume Testing Centre at Fo Tan. Introductory seminars on air pollution control and improvement for Chinese Cuisine, Western Cuisine, Other Cuisine and Food manufacturing was taken place in 2007.
Besides, BEC is assisting a worldwide hotel chain to attain certification to the Green Globe standards. The certification process involves benchmarking of key indicators regarding energy efficiency, water usage and waste production. Other indicators include use of paper products, chemicals and pesticide usage and community considerations. An environmental management system will also be developed.
