The BEC IAQ (Indoor Air Quality) Solutions Centre aims at promoting IAQ and enhancing public health and wellness. The Centre provides assessment, certification and training services. It also collaborates with Hong Kong IAQ Society, offering certification of IAQ professionals as CIAQA TM (Certified Indoor Air Quality Assessor) sanctioned by the American IAQ Council.

Poor IAQ can be a prime cause of discomfort and illness in the workplace, impacting workforce productivity and competitiveness through increased absenteeism caused by poor air quality. The Centre can assess all twelve of the IAQ objectives included in the Hong Kong SAR Government's Guidance Notes for IAQ Management in Offices and Public Places, namely: Carbon Dioxide, Carbon Monoxide, Respirable Suspended Particles, Nitrogen Dioxide, Ozone, Formaldehyde, Total Volatile Organic Compound, Radon and airborne bacteria, temperature, relative humidity and air movement.

The Centre became Hong Kong’s first accredited Certificate Issuing Body (CIB) in December 2007 under the Hong Kong Inspection Body Accreditation Scheme (HKIAS) of the Hong Kong Accreditation Service (HKAS) Executive. As such our IAQ certification and renewal services meet the strictest requirements for inspection and quality control, using properly calibrated equipment operated only by approved signatories and inspectors.

As from 1st February 2008, only accredited IAQ CIBs are able to issue IAQ certificates with a HKIAS accreditation mark to recognize the quality of their work. Premises owners and management companies are able to use dedicated IAQ certificates for display at their certified premises and in their communication materials.

Investigation of the Indoor Air Fungi in Office Buildings and Public Places
BEC works as part of a team commissioned by the Air Group of the HKSAR Government's Environmental Protection Department (EPD) to undertake an "Investigation of the Indoor Air Fungi in Office Buildings and Public Places in HKSAR". The study is led by Prof Lilian Vrijmoed from City University , an internationally recognised expert in the field of micro-biology and the study of bacteria, moulds, and fungi. BEC's members, as the target of this research, benefited from free assessment and advisory opportunity.
