BEC is pleased to support Earth Hour to turn off the lights for one hour from 8:30pm to 9:30pm on 28 March 2009.

Earth Hour initiated by WWF in 2007, is a global effort and direct action address to climate change. It raises global awareness of the importance of reducing carbon emissions and energy conservation so that a sustainable and healthy environment can be passed onto our future generations.

In 2007, 2.2 million people and 2,100 businesses in Sydney, Australia turn off their lights for one hour. In 2008, 50 million people in 370 cities across 35 countries participated in Earth Hour. In 2009, Hong Kong joins with 73 cities in 62 countries around the globe to turn the city dark.

By now, more than 140 business companies have already pledged to support Earth Hour; "A Symphony of Lights" will be suspended; iconic buildings, including the highest building IFC will switch off the lights. Support is also received from the government including Environment Bureau, Home Affairs Bureau and Hong Kong Observatory, Legislative Council, District Councils.

We can change our lifestyles to reduce our impact on the environment. Switching off is a simple yet meaningful and effective action. We encourage all members, corporations, and individuals to join Earth Hour 2009, and turn off your lights at 8:30pm on Saturday, 28 March for a brighter future.
