EnviroSeries Conference: Sustainability in the Built Environment
Creating Momentum in the Pan Pearl River Delta

You are cordially invited to attend the captioned EnviroSeries Conference organized by Business Environment Council to be held on 7 June 2006. This conference will explore the current situation in China and the design, planning, construction and available technologies to help us deliver resource efficient, user and environment friendly and cost effective buildings. We are honoured to have twelve experts from 2 Coasts 4 Regions (Hong Kong, China, Macau and Taiwan) to share their views and our keynote speakers include:

  • The Hon Leung Chun-ying, GBS, JP, Convenor of the Executive Council, HKSAR
  • Prof Qin Youguo, Professor, Chairman of Academic Committee, School of Architecture, TsingHua University
  • Dr. Kou Kun Pang, Assistant Professor, Head of Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Macau

Rapid development has delivered us at a point in history where the limits to growth are being tested. The availability of key resources for development, in particular energy and water, but also materials and space is becoming of increasing concern. At the same time, our communities have become sensitized to, and indeed expect solutions for, the high pollution levels, numerous health scares and changing local urban conditions.

The sustainability of our built environment has a key role to play. Construction is the largest consumer of major materials such as cement, steel, and water. Buildings are in themselves the largest consumer of energy and materials across their life cycles, and the design quality of our built environment has a significant impact on the quality of our local environment, and by definition our lives.

The speakers will define the issues, share examples, discuss solutions and priority, and shape the strategies forward in the following sessions:

  • Opportunities in the Pan PRD (“Green Building Challenges and Opportunities in China”, “11th Five Year Plan and Green Development”, “Design, Strategies & Techniques in Environmental Controls for Urban Habitats of China Cities”)
  • Sustainability Solutions and Innovations in the Built Environment (“Creating Smart and Sustainable Built Environment in Asia”, “LCA/LCC as a Key Consideration Component towards a Built Environment Sustainability”, “The Everlasting Chinese Culture — Feng Shui Applied To Built Environment of Nowadays”, “Leveraging Sustainable Built Environment through Global Financial Instrument”, “A Global Perspective on Green Construction Material Label”)
