BEC members joined Exploring the Environmental Measures of MTR at Kowloon Bay Depot

18 participants joined the BEC membership visit to the Kowloon Bay Depot in MTR Headquarters to observe practical environmental measures on 19 July 2011. The visit began with a warm welcome from Ms Jane Wong from Corporate Relations Department to every guest. Mr Michael Chan from Environmental Engineering Team then gave an overview of noise mitigation measures and introduced specific innovative noise control technologies.

The BEC guests then set off for the exclusive area of the depot to explore a variety of train maintenance processes. A train ride to a train wash plant was arranged for guests to closely experience the train wash facilities and procedures. Mr SF Lau, Maintenance Engineer, led the tour around the depot, explained the noise reduction technologies and demonstrated waste metal recycling practices. BEC guests, led by Depot Engineer Mr Paul Wong, visited the waste water treatment plant. Mr Wong illustrated the dilution and filtration procedures which help minimize the impact to the environment before discharge. Guests were able to learn the applied environmental practices in sewage treatment, noise mitigation and waste metal recycling.
