2 Nov 04 - Luncheon Recap
The Role of Business in Tomorrow's Society

Proceedings from a BEC / WBCSD luncheon, 2 Nov 04

Mr Bjorn Stigson, President of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, addressed over 40 executives from leading private and public sector organisations at a Business Environment Council (BEC) luncheon on 2nd November 2004 at the Hong Kong Club.

"business can't succeed in societies that fail"

In his speech, Mr Stigson outlined the substantial contribution towards sustainable development made by business in a short period of time, and also identified the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

"more will be asked of business to contribute, both environmentally and socially"

In particular he emphasised the global public policy agenda that "like it or not, business must face", with issues including sustainable production and consumption, privatisation, energy and climate, ecosystems, corporate responsibility and risk. He also highlighted the business agenda, and the actions that companies are taking to address sustainable development "because they make perfect business sense".

"its hard to believe we can achieve a sustainable future without changes in lifestyle"

In wrapping up, Mr Stigson stressed the importance for businesses to maintain their engagement and shared his thoughts on how they can act. “Business needs a vision of where society is going, to understand its stakeholders, and ensure that it truly walks the talk”. It's your actions that count, not your plans!
