BEC has worked closely with government, utilities and individual companies to appraise the market status of many issues, and the technical feasibility of potential solutions. This work has covered strategic areas such as water pollution from international shipping, energy conservation and demand side management, and waste management.
Since 1997, BEC has helped various government departments, e.g. Environmental Protection Department (EPD), Architectural Services Department (ArchSD), Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD), Trade and Industry Department (TID) to operate various hotlines, helpdesks and support programs for specific trades or themes. These programmes include EPD Waste Reduction and Recycling Hotline, Green Restaurant Helpdesk Programmes, TID Funded SME Support and Incubation Centre for Local Manufacturing SMEs.
Waste management research is also one key focus area of BEC. Since the release of the Municipal Solid Waste Policy Framework by government in 2005, BEC has been actively helping both business and government in realizing sustainable waste management through various engagement programmes research studies (e.g. Integrated Waste Management Facilities Public Engagement Programme, Municipal Solid Waste Charging Scheme Trial Study etc.)
