With such limited space and densely populated communities, Hong Kong faces critical problems in the management of its waste. Initiated in April 2002, the Waste Management Committee seeks to address waste management issues in Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta.

Key areas of activity include:

  • responding to government consultation papers and formulating recommendations to the BEC Executive Committee;
  • serving as a forum to exchange and share best practices from Hong Kong and overseas, helping to raise the awareness of business of the importance and benefits of good waste management;
  • identifying priority areas (such as support for the recycling business, education or government lobbying) and maintaining relationships with relevant local bodies;
  • developing concepts and ideas to catalyse projects and programmes that can be implemented by the BEC or its member companies
