BEC rebrands its Net-zero Carbon Charter to raise business ambition and accelerate net-zero action

Business Environment Council Limited (“BEC”) celebrated the official launch of the newly rebranded BEC Net-zero Carbon Charter with 60 Charter signatories at BEC Net-zero Carbon Charter Launch Ceremony today, achieving a remarkable milestone of the organisation.

BEC Net-zero Carbon Charter, riding on the merits of its predecessor BEC Low Carbon Charter launched in 2019, has attracted a total of 60 signatories from a diverse range of industries including property and construction, banking and finance, engineering and architecture, aviation and shipping, power and utilities, and hospitality sectors.

Officiating at the ceremony, Mr Wong Chuen Fai, JP, Commissioner for Climate Change of the Hong Kong SAR Government, said, “The government will lead Hong Kong towards the goal carbon neutrality through the introduction of macro policies to decarbonise our energy supply, promote green transport and reduce waste, and the success of our decarbonisation efforts will depend to a significant extent the active participation of all sectors of society. Among all sectors, our local business sectors have a particularly important role to play in this endeavour as they have the resources, influence, and innovation necessary to drive meaningful change, as well as the responsibility to contribute to the sustainable development of the society.”

Mr Kevin O’Brien, Chairman of BEC, said, “The rebranded BEC Net-zero Carbon Charter will remain focused on mobilising companies and organisations to collectively contribute towards Hong Kong’s long-term decarbonisation journey through their pledge to set targets and actions for a net-zero future. However, we have raised the ambition of the Charter so that it is aligned with Hong Kong’s 2050 carbon neutrality goal and the business imperative towards net-zero.”

“Being a key player in society, the business community also has a pivotal role to play in Hong Kong’s transition to a low-carbon economy. We are pleased to welcome our signatories from the business sector to join us for accelerating net-zero action. BEC will organise capacity building events regularly to support signatories and businesses in setting, operationalising, and achieving their emission reduction targets.” added Mr Simon Ng, CEO of BEC.

BEC Net-zero Carbon Charter consists of two parts: Declaration and Commitment. Signatories, who can commit to either Action Signatory or Science-aligned Signatory, are required to self-report their progress and achievements as requested by BEC once a year. Regarding emission reduction ambition, Action Signatories should have a clear reduction target as minimum requirement; whereas Science-aligned Signatories should clearly pursue reduction targets following 1.5°C aligned science-based pathway.

In addition, signatories will be invited to share their insights and experience in co-learning workshops and activities organised by BEC. They will also have access to BEC expertise and opportunity to participate in charter support programmes such as Power Up Coalition, Carbon Disclosure Programme, Hong Kong International Airport Carbon Capacity Building Programme, and Global Connect Initiative.

As an ongoing initiative, BEC will continue to welcome companies to embark on their decarbonisation journey toward net zero by signing BEC Net-zero Carbon Charter.
