  • Organization Profile
  • Founded in 1862, The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) is one of the largest energy suppliers in Hong Kong, operating with world-class corporate management and leading-edge business practices. For more than 150 years, Towngas has grown with Hong Kong, evolving from a single-focus company supplying gas for street lamps to its current position as a leading green energy supplier in mainland China and beyond.

Building on its solid foundation in the gas industry, Towngas has diversified its business, moving into eco-friendly energy, water projects, building services engineering and telecommunications infrastructure to further its contribution towards a sustainable future.

  • Environment and Sustainability Highlights
  • Towngas pledges to make every effort to protect the environment and promote sustainable development.

Through dedicated efforts to minimise its carbon footprint while developing clean energy for homes, businesses and vehicles, Towngas is committed to its ultimate goal of creating a more sustainable future.

Its feedstock in Hong Kong, which includes a mix of natural gas, naphtha and landfill gas, has significantly reduced air pollutants and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. As the first organisation in Hong Kong to use landfill gas for commercial purposes, Towngas currently uses flue gas from three sites: Shuen Wan Landfill, North East New Territories Landfill and South East New Territories (SENT) Landfill. The SENT Landfill Gas Utilisation Project is the largest conversion facility of its kind in Asia. This waste-to-energy project has the capacity to cut as much as 13,000 tonnes of naphtha consumption and 56,000 tonnes of carbon emissions per year, equivalent to the annual CO2 absorption of 2.4 million trees.

In addition to reducing GHG emissions from its operations, Towngas is committed to helping its customers go green. Towngas continuously develops gas appliances and applications with high energy efficiency, and has been helping its commercial and industrial customers make the switch from diesel to gas as well as supplying them with landfill gas. One example is the first landfill gas-powered Combined Heat and Power Generating System at Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital, which has significantly reduced not only energy costs but also carbon emissions.

As a responsible energy supplier, Towngas spares no effort in strengthening stakeholder engagement. Towngas seeks to promote awareness of sustainable development to its employees, contractors, suppliers, customers as well as the general public via a comprehensive range of training and educational activities. To capitalise on the synergy of partnership, it also supports the environmental programmes of numerous green groups.
