13 September 2013: Industry Visit to The Kowloon Motor Bus Company (1933) Limited (KMB) - Shatin Depot

BEC members enjoyed a fruitful afternoon during an Industry Visit to KMB Shatin Depot. In the first part of the visit, participants joined a bus tour to learn about the daily operations of the depot. The water recycling system, which treats and recycles waste water discharged from bus cleaning, was also introduced. After the bus tour, participants got the opportunity to operate a bus at the Driving Simulator Studio.

26 September 2013: Industry Visit to Kai Tak Cruise Terminal

At the Industry Visit to Kai Tak Cruise Terminal Building in Kwun Tong, Mr Jackson Wai, Senior Project Manager of Architectural Services Department, delivered a presentation on the detailed sustainable design and service facilities of the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal. Participants then joined a guided tour to enjoy the panoramic harbour view at the rooftop garden. Overall, participants were inspired by the construction methods and efficient logistics arrangement of the Cruise Terminal.

 

BEC Activity

Upcoming BEC IEE Training Courses in the Fourth Quarter 2013

BEC IEE will offer a number of courses on various environmental related topics from October to December this year. These courses are now open for enrolment:

26 Oct 2013: “Introduction to Food Waste Management and Urban Farming in Hong Kong" will focus on the various methods and treatment of food waste, how it can be transformed into resources, and the environmental conditions of urban farming in Hong Kong. It will also include a hand-on session on small-scale urban farming.

24 Oct 2013 / 21 Nov 2013: “Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Management & Improvement” will provide the essential knowledge about IAQ for the practitioners who are responsible for facility or building management.

14 Nov 2013 / 5 Dec 2013: “Green Property Management in Office and Building” will introduce the key concepts of green property management and ways to establish green offices and buildings.

21 Nov 2013 / 19 Dec 2013: “Reducing My Carbon Footprint at Office” will cover the key concepts of greenhouse gas emissions, carbon footprint calculation, and ways to reduce carbon footprint in office.

12 and 13 Dec 2013: “ISO 14001 Internal Auditing” will allow participants to understand the concepts of ISO 14001 and the requirements of the standard in order to conduct a successful internal audit of an environmental management system and produce an audit report.

HR Excellence Award 2013 Award Presentation Ceremony

Organised by the Hong Kong Institute of Human Resource Management (HKIHRM), the HR Excellence Award 2013 represents the most prestigious human resources award recognition in Hong Kong, aiming to recognise organisations’ efforts in human resources solutions and management.

The Award Presentation Ceremony was held successfully on 8 October 2013. As the Associate Assessor and Supporting Organisation of the Award, BEC congratulates all the Award winners who are listed in HKIHRM website.

CarbonSmart Programme: Capability Enhancement Workshop – Carbon Audit and Carbon Management Technique

The CarbonSmart Programme is a government-funded programme which aims to encourage and sustain concerted industry effort in carbon audit and reduction to shape a low carbon future. This Programme will offer a series of capability enhancement workshops for environmental industries to enhance their carbon management skills.

On 22 October 2013, BEC will arrange a workshop at BEC Headquarter to provide an introduction to carbon audit, its global trend and associated practical techniques. Representatives from Grand Central Plaza are invited to share their initiatives, experience and achievement on carbon reduction measures. For more details, please refer to the programme flyer (Chinese version only) or contact Mr Dennis Yeung at 2784 3914.

Green Delight in Estates Programme 2013-2014: Green Living Carnivals

BEC will co-organise a series of carnivals, with the theme of “Waste Reduction”, in various public housing estates under Housing Authority’s Green Delight in Estates Programme 2013-2014. The first carnival will be held on 19 October 2013 in On Yam Estate, Kwai Chung. Companies are welcomed to join the carnivals as Green Estate Ambassadors and help promote environmental friendly messages to the general public. High on the sustainability agenda is the formulation of a long-term and environmentally sustainable energy strategy that enables Hong Kong to stay ahead of future challenges. This calls for clear policies, cross-sector collaborations and social innovation.

The Legal Principles Concerning a Judicial Review of an EIA Report

BEC’s General Member Mayer Brown JSM has recently written an article looking at the legal principles considered by the Court of First Instance in Leung Hon Wai v. Director of Environmental Protection and Town Planning Board (HCAL 49/2012), which concerns a judicial review relating to a designated project to construct and operate a municipal wastes incinerator (“Project”). In this judicial review, the Applicant challenged the approval of an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Report and the issuance of an Environmental Permit by the Director of Environmental Protection (Director) in the Director’s capacity as both the applicant and grantor of approval of the Project.
