Establishment of BEC Advisory Groups

To address major environmental related issues in Hong Kong and contribute to the improvement in environmental performance of businesses, BEC established the BEC ESG Advisory Group in February 2013 to steer the discussion, advocacy, research, and awareness enhancement activities of BEC. The BEC Waste Management Advisory Group will follow suit with its inaugural meeting to be held in March 2013.

BEC Activities

BEC IEE Offers Comprehensive Environmental and Sustainability Training Courses


Some all-rounded training courses will be offered by BEC Institute of Environmental Education (IEE) in March and April 2013. These courses aim to better equip participants with the essential knowledge on environmental management and sustainability.

14 to 15 March 2013: “ISO 14001 Internal Auditor Training” is a 2-day training course allowing participants to understand the concepts of ISO 14001 and obtain the knowledge and skills needed to interpret the requirements of the standard in order to conduct a successful internal audit of an environmental management system and produce an audit report based on the findings.

9 April 2013: “Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Management & Improvement” will provide the knowledge about IAQ essential for the practitioners responsible for facility/building management.

23 to 24 April 2013: “Case Studies of BEAM Plus for Contractors” covers topics that contractors need to know in order to manage their BEAM Plus responsibilities. These two green building related courses are supported by Hong Kong Green Building Council and regarded as a General CPD Programme for BEAM Pro.

17 April 2013: “The Business Case of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Environmental Sustainability Globalization (ESG) Disclosure for Hong Kong Companies” will examine the relationship between corporate social and environmental accountability and long-term risks, as well as to understand the importance and requirements on the disclosure.

CCBF Announces Survey Results on Energy Efficiency and Climate Change

BEC initiatives Climate Change Business Forum (CCBF) launched the results of its third annual Hong Kong Business Survey on Energy Efficiency and Climate Change on 28 February at an event entitled “Which Way Forward? Jump-starting Hong Kong’s Low-carbon Economy”.The results reveals that companies are willing to pay more for clean electricity despite of higher energy costs.

“Hong Kong businesses are astute. Of course we are attentive to basic costs. But smart business entails long-term thinking. Paying more for clean energy now will yield dividends in health and productivity in the future. A low-carbon economy powered by clean energy: that’s an investment we’re willing to make,” said Thomas Ho, Chief Executive of Gammon Construction and CCBF ExCo Chair.

Approximately 300 companies, reflecting the industry makeup of Hong Kong businesses, were interviewed via telephone between 20 September and 16 October 2012 for the survey. The results of it and of previous surveys can be found on the CCBF website.



BEC Members Event

BEC Industry Visit to North East New Territories (NENT) Landfill


On 20 February 2013, BEC hosted an Industry Visit to North East New Territories (NENT) Landfill, the largest landfill gas utilisation project in Hong Kong. Mr Y O Yeung, Process Plant Manager of the Landfill, introduced the operation process and future development plan of the landfill. The group took a closer look of the leachate treatment system and landfill gas collection system. They also visited the waste water treatment plant to learn more about its operations.

Mr Yeung alerted the group that even though the scale of the landfill looks huge, it only takes a few years to fill it up. There is an urgency to solve the waste management problem in Hong Kong.

7 March 2013: BEC Leadership Networking Series


The upcoming BEC Leadership Networking Series will be staged at the Pacific Club in Tsim Sha Tsui on 7 March 2013 in the form of Chinese dinner with a sharing session to celebrate the Year of Snake.

Mr Edmond Ho, Managing Director of Kowloon Motor Bus, will be the keynote speaker to share ideas on traffic management through the rationalisation of bus routes.

Chinachem Group Environmental Conference


On 16 November 2012, BEC Corporate Member Chinachem Group hosted its second Environmental Conference themed “Sustainable Development: A Better Quality of Life 2012”, with converging like-minded organisations to generate new green ideas and inspirations.

Dr Kung Yan-sum, Executive Director and Chairman of Chinachem Group, introduced the green initiatives that Chinachem implemented in its projects and business operations to achieve environmental goals at the Conference. Local and international experts from a diverse backgrounds shared best practices about sustainable development in a wide range of aspects including planning and design, transport, and investment.
