BEC Submission on the 2017 Policy Address

BEC has sent our submission on the 2017 Chief Executive Policy Address to the Government at the end September, after having consolidated the views of BEC members and Advisory Groups.

The submission, entitled “Transitioning to a Low Carbon and Circular Economy”, covers the themes of:

  • transition to a low-carbon and competitive economy through putting in place an ambitious and comprehensive Action Plan,
  • low emission transport system and tightened air quality for enhancing liveability of our city,
  • reducing impacts of waste and optimizing our use of resources,
  • strengthening our status as a centre of expertise in responsible investment and green finance in the region, and
  • embedding principles of sustainability and nature conservation into planning policies and longer term strategies for securing the community’s social well-being.

BEC participates in Eco Expo Asia 2016

Eco Expo Asia is a leading exhibition showcasing the latest environmental protection technologies, services and products over the world. The 11th Expo provides a premier platform for environmental industry players to explore cooperation opportunities and tap into the fast-growing Asian market. For details, please click here.

BEC Partnership Programme

BEC Low-carbon School – Eco Expo Asia 2016

Over 1,000 primary and secondary students will be able to join the Expo Guided Tours on the event’s Public Day (29 October) under the “BEC Low-carbon School – Eco Expo Asia 2016”. Among them, 400 will also participate in the Dialogue with Secretary for the Environment on the day. The programme, funded by the Environment and Conservation Fund and the Environmental Campaign Committee, aims to raise awareness on environmental protection, sustainability and low-carbon behaviour of our young generations.

BEC, together with a drama association, will also bring interesting messages on low-carbon lifestyle to local primary schools. We are to develop and organise a series of 8 roving drama shows to be staged at 8 schools between December 2016 to March 2017.

BEC Upcoming Events

12 October : BEC Industry Visit to T ▪ PARK (Tuen Mun Sludge Treatment Facilities)

BEC’s T ▪ PARK visit in July has received overwhelming response. We are therefore pleased to organise another half-day Industry Visit on 12 October to T ▪ PARK – the first sludge treatment facility in Hong Kong. In the visit, participants will learn about various waste management technologies including sludge incineration and wastewater treatment, as well as the benefits of transforming waste into energy and recycling in everyday life. Participants can also enjoy the spa facilities provided by the Environmental Education Centre of T ▪ PARK.

14 October: Sustainable Supply Chains Workshop

Hong Kong businesses can contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals by addressing sustainability within their supply chains and procurement practices. In this half-day workshop, sustainability leaders share best practices, describe their approaches, and explore future trends related to sustainable supply chains and procurement.

24 October : BEC Workshop on ESG Reporting

The 2-hour workshop will focus on the crucial aspects of sustainability reporting, including the key stages of the reporting process, the value of report verification, as well as the requirements of the HKEx ESG Guide. This workshop is supported by the Hong Kong Quality Assurance Agency.

BEC IEE Training Courses

BEC Institute for Environmental Education ("BEC IEE") will organise various environmental training courses in November 2016 as follows:

How to Operate Your Business /Organisation in a Socially Responsible Way? An Introductory Training of BS ISO 26000:2010 (2nd Intake) (9 November 2016) – Co-organised with BSI, this 6-hour course provides basic concepts of implementing and managing a social responsibility programme in accordance with ISO 26000:2010, an international guidance standard on social responsibility. The course also introduces seven core subjects that users of ISO 26000:2010 need to consider.

Comprehensive Certificate Course for BEAM Plus on Energy Use (EU) 2016 (14 – 30 November 2016) – This intensive training course, co-organised with ASHRAE Hong Kong Chapter, BEAM Society Limited and Building Services Operation and Maintenance Executives Society, is designed for building and facility management professionals, project managers, engineers, the other professionals and practitioners who are interested in green building projects. Participants will acquire essential knowledge on Energy Use (EU) from experienced and professional speakers. It is recognised as Mandatory CPD course for BEAM Pro and BEAM Affiliate.

BEC Past Events

2 September : BEC Industry Visit to District Cooling System at Kai Tak District

During the visit, participants were introduced to the energy-saving technology applied in the cooling system in Kai Tak new development area. They were guided to tour the plant of the District Cooling System which supplies chilled water to the centralised air-conditioning system for commercial buildings in the area.

22 September : BEC Anniversary Dinner 2016

About 300 guests, including senior government officials, business leaders, sustainability professionals, BEC members and partners, attended the Anniversary Dinner to celebrate BEC’s achievements in the year, preview our opportunities ahead, and network with old and new friends.

In his keynote speech, Mr KS Wong, Secretary for the Environment, acknowledged BEC’s efforts in promoting environmental excellence.

27 September : BEC Industry Visit to Holiday Inn Express Hong Kong SoHo

The hotel is the first commercial high rise building in the world achieving Four platinum, or equivalent of Green Awards -- in Hong Kong, the US, Singapore and mainland China. At the onsite presentation and guided tour, participants learnt of the hotel’s “green” designs and sustainable practices. Compared with hotels of similar scale, it achieves energy saving of about 60%, and carbon emissions reduction of about 70%.
